A little (Mac) knowledge is NOT a dangerous thing!

The more you know about your Mac, the more you can get from it and the more secure you will feel that your data is safe. I'd like to share the odd tidbit, link and article. This section will grow, so please come back.

  • Wait at least a few days before updating your OS, to see if there are any problems. Let someone else find them for you!
  • Before updating your OS, always backup before updating. Always use Combo updaters. Always unplug all FireWire and USB devices except the keyboard and mouse. Always repair permissions immediately before and after applying the upgrade (I am not sure about the last... but it can't hurt).
  • NEVER leave important files on your desktop.
  • Should I dump my PC for a Mac?
  • Got a new Mac? Info for Migration and for New Users.

Here are a few of my favorite sites for Mac Tips and News.

To date, Macs are almost entirely virus free. If you are concerned, or if you exchange Word documents with Windows or Mac users, I recommend Intego VirusBarrier.

Disk Warrior does only one thing. It rebuilds your directory, the "road map" that tells the hard drive where the individual bits of data are stored on your drive.

Mac Pilot allows customization of your system, broadband networking, file sharing and does essential maintenance.

More to come...

  • MacFixit Great source for news, problem reports and fixes.
  • XLR8YourMac Another great news source, with emphasis on keeping your Mac fast and trouble-free
  • MacInTouch New hardware, software and general Mac news reports
  • Watchster Mac News

Leopard is coming HERE!

The most important announcement from Apple recently is the ship date for Mac OS X 10.5, called Leopard. Apple touts the 300 new features on this page: Leopard and a guided tour to Leopard can be found here: Leopard Guided Tour.

We suggest that you be a bit cautious adopting Leopard into your business. Like all .0 software, this first version of a new operating system may have a bug or 2. I will install it ASAP, and continue to test. When I am sure it is stable, I'll let you know.

If you are an early adopter, please remember to BACK UP thoroughly before installing Leopard, and back up your data regularly. Applications or add-ons that work well in 10.4 may be broken in Leopard, so check to see if there are updates and install them first.

More info about Leopard on LMC's Leopard Page and info about issues and problems here

Macworld Expo coming soon

January 5-9, 2009
Moscone Center, San Francisco, California

Macworld is the major Macintosh exhibition in the world. This year we expect a standout show, with the sad exception of Adobe, who will have lots of workshops but will not be exhibiting on the floor of Moscone this year.

Registration is simple, and can be done here. If you are a Mac Users Group member, or contact many of the vendors offering discounts, you can save on the regular pagkage prices.
